13 “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.
14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
Matthew 5:13-16 (NLT)
I love Matthew 5. It’s a chapter where Jesus is teaching really hard hitting (and convicting!) stuff such as anger and forgiveness (v21-24), lust and adultery (v27-30) and revenge. Matthew 5 is definitely a chapter to read and meditate on. I love the Bible, because it continues to change us, convict us and transform us from the inside out to become more like Jesus Christ.
But onto why these verses are significant for me. When I first read Matthew 5:13-16, I initially thought, how can I be the light when I am so insignificant in my school/church? I think this is a lie that we all tend to believe. That we are insignificant. That we can’t be the difference because we’re too quiet to be heard or too loud to be taken seriously. We’re too this or too that.
All that we need to be the light is within us. All the tools – your personality, the way you talk and the way you walk – who you are is enough to be the light. The power resides in you to be the light (Romans 8:11). Don’t walk in your own strength or try to be someone else to make an impact.
We all are people of influence. There are people in our world – schools, universities, work etc – that we can impact just by being ourselves. Even if it is just one person, one person’s life has been changed by you. Not all of us are meant to reach the thousands or millions (even though we want to) but that one person who is deeply valued and treasured by God is a life we can touch.
Being the light doesn’t mean we have to do the most and be a saviour/hero. That role has already been taken by Jesus. All we can do is love. Love our neighbour despite their flaws and annoying little habits. Love our enemy even when they spit in your face and degrade you. Its flipping hard, I can testify to that but like I said earlier, the power resides in us. Be the friend when times are tough. Be the sibling through thick and thin. Be there. Be present.
Let’s change our worlds today by being the light.
I really recommend listening to this track Illuminate (Na na na na) by CASS. Great song! I feel it really goes this this idea of be the light. It’s an EDM (electronic dance music)/pop worship song! I absolutely love her music! Check out her GENESIS EP and GENESIS Remixes!!
